Plant-based Friday represents plant-based wellness consumers and the plant-based community. We encourage the budding plant-based industry to creatively focus on empowering and serving Healthy Happy Holistic Humans.

Eating less meat and eating more healthy plant-based foods greatly reduce the incidence of chronic preventable diseases. It protects our planet and preserves precious land and water resources; eliminates factory farming, saves animals, and positively impacts climate.

Plant-based Friday is a simple message. Build a Happy and Healthy new you; one day at a time. Every Friday eat at home or a local restaurant and enjoy healthy plant-based meals.

Research shows that big changes start with small simple steps. We build habits over a 66-day period. Eating Plant-based just one day a week will lead to two days and then perhaps three, and after a while, you feel healthier and happier. And soon Plant-based Friday will lead you to eat and enjoy fruits, vegetables, and plant-based meals throughout the week.

While “Plant-based” has become a catch-all phrase there are really three distinct categories of plant-based eating.

The term “plant-based” encompasses a variety of dietary options that include low (or no) amounts of animal-source foods, such as dairy and meat, and consists primarily of high amounts of plant-source foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, and plant-derived products. In general, a product or food can be categorized as “plant-based” if it doesn’t include any ingredients made from an animal, not highly processed and from a natural plant source.

There is no one exact way to eat a plant-based diet, but rather a variety of options. Choices range from no-animal products (vegan) to mostly-plants, but occasionally eating meat and animal-based foods.

What is Plant-based Friday?

Plant -based friday focuses on the three plant-base eating options.
Flexitarian / Vegan / Vegetarian
  1. Flexitarian. Following a diet that consists primarily of plant-based foods, but occasionally incorporating small quantities of animal-based products (meat, seafood, and dairy) into meals. The idea is to reduce the consumption of most animal products, but being flexible, a.k.a. “flexitarian,” in one’s dietary choices when needed or desired.
  2. Vegetarian. Avoiding all meat (no beef, chicken, seafood, or pork). Incorporating some non-meat animal products like fluid dairy, cheese, eggs, and honey into a diet.
  3. Vegan, Not eating any food or ingredient derived from an animal. Example; meat, seafood, dairy, eggs, or honey. Many practicing vegans also extend their dietary choices into other areas of their lifestyle, such as not wearing leather and not purchasing products made with animal ingredients. Vegan was coined by English animal-rights activist Donald Watson in 1944. Vegan refers to individuals who fully abstain from all animal products for ethical reasons. Today, someone who identifies as a Vegan can be making the choice for a number of reasons; including environmental conservation, animal welfare, or personal health.

Benefits of a plant-based diet

For your health

Plant-based ingredients and foods, like fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and grains are typically low in saturated fat and cholesterol, high in fiber, and excellent sources of vitamins and minerals. Adding more plant-based meals and consuming less meat in your diet have been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease.

That being said, not all plant-based foods are created equal. Sugar is entirely plant-based, and so is bleached (refined) white flour, but these ingredients retain few nutrients. Nutritionists agree that these foods should be consumed in moderation. Focusing on whole grains, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like walnuts, chia, and hemp seeds, algae-based oils, etc., fruits, vegetables, and unsaturated fats provide a protective health benefit.

For the environment

An overwhelming body of scientific research shows the detrimental impact of industrial livestock, chemical pesticides, and factory farming on the environment. A predominately plant-based diet is more sustainable than one centered on meat and dairy products because industrial animal agriculture uses more land, water, and natural resources than plant-based foods. Livestock production alone contributes an estimated 15% of all global greenhouse gas emissions from human activities — more than our entire transportation sector.

So, how do you start?

#Plant-based Friday is a simple weekly practice that accommodates individual preferences and lifestyles. The only basic requirement is to slowly reduce unhealthy eating choices, and gradually replace them with healthy choices. It’s an easy way to become more familiar and comfortable with plant-based foods, and kick-start a healthy eating lifestyle.

After encouragement from Mercy For Animals and supporters, Americaʹs largest seafood chain, Long John Silverʹs, is off the hook! In partnership with Good Catch, the iconic chain is set to start testing plant-based sea-inspired options at five locations in California and Georgia. After encouragement from Mercy For Animals and supporters, Long John Silverʹs will test two new products featuring Good Catchʹs plant-based crab cakes and fish fillets. A win for animals and consumers alike! 
In 2018 Mercy For Animals released an undercover investigation revealing atrocities at sea. The investigator captured heartbreaking footage of Californiaʹs driftnet fishing industry and its devastating impact on fish and other marine animals. Shortly after this crucial investigation, California banned large-scale driftnets.

New 16 Plant-based Option Fast Food Restaurant choices #PlantbasedFriday. Plant-based eating is spreading rapidly. It’s in the National Supermarkets and now National Fast Food Restaurant chains. Here is a new list of 16 Fast Food Chains that carry Plant-based options for health-conscious consumers.

  1. Burger King  has the Impossible Whopper, which uses the Impossible Burger. They are also testing a plant-based version of their Chicken Royale sandwich in the United Kingdom
  2. California Pizza Kitchen. The California Veggie Pizza and the Tostada Thin Crust can both be easily made plant based. There’s also the plant based “Don’t Call Me Chicken” BBQ pizza. California Kitchen also offers a selection of soups, bowls, and salads.  
  3. Cheesecake Factory Plant based options include the vegan Cobb salad, Korean fried cauliflower, pasta pomodoro, avocado toast, spinach and mushroom flatbread, lasagna, French country salad, and their version of the Impossible Burger.
  4. Del Taco was  was an early adopter of plant-based eating choices. They also provide a comprehensive list of meatless options that includes burritos, tacos, bowls and even a crunchy tostada. Their Epic Beyond Fresh Guacamole Burrito is totally vegan and contains 44 grams of protein.
  5. Dunkin’ recently introduced a vegetarian Southwest Veggie Power Breakfast Sandwich, which features a Morningstar Farms Black Bean Patty layered with a loaded egg. They also have vegan choices such as bagels, hash browns, English muffins, oatmeal, and avocado toast, and a white omelet topped with aged white cheddar cheese on a multigrain. Dunkin’ also has plant-based milks like oat, almond, or coconut milk.
  6. Just Salad offers salad bowls packed with Beyond Beef Meatballs and Breaded Daring Chicken, which are both entirely plant based. You can also build your own salad, wrap, or bowl from dozens of delicious ingredients like roasted sweet potatoes, balsamic mushrooms, roasted corn, vegan cheese, and avocado
  7. Little Caesars has all kinds of pizzas with plant-based veggie choices  and has recently released its plant-based pepperoni;
  8. Mellow Mushroom plant-based pizza options include dairy-free cheese, Follow Your Heart brand, and plant-based proteins, such as tofu and tempeh… plus every veggie topping you could possibly imagine.
  9. Panda Express a wide selection of plant-based options and sides, including Eggplant Tofu, Veggie Spring Rolls, broccoli, kale, cabbage, and Chow Mein. And now many new options like Beyond Meat Orange ‘Chicken’, Beyond Beef Pot stickers, Quinoa Cauliflower Fried Rice, Wok-fried Seasonal Veggies, and Kung Pao Mushroom & Potato.
  10. Panera Bread has vegan and plant-based options, like salad and bowls sans dairy or meat products. They have a Baja bowl, Mediterranean grain bowl, tomato basil cucumber salad, ten vegetable soup, Greek salad, and strawberry poppy salad and all can be modified to be totally vegan-friendly.
  11. Qdoba has menu items for both vegetarians and vegans. Many of their selections can be customized to include Impossible plant-based meats. Some also have some standard menu items like their Impossible taco salad and fajita vegan bowl, which are designed to be vegetarian-friendly.
  12. Red Robin offers two different vegan burger patties: a house-made veggie patty made with quinoa and ancient grains and the Impossible Burger. You can also customize many of their burgers to be vegan by omitting the cheese and aioli.
  13. Starbucks has been an innovator of plant-based and vegetarian offering. Their Impossible Breakfast Sandwich is a tasty alternative of vegetarian protein breakfast. They also have  fruit and cheese, chickpea bites with avocado, egg and Gouda, and peanut butter and jelly. They also have a variety of plant-based milks and an expansive menu of naturally dairy-free drinks
  14. Taco Bell has many plant-based options. Their menu revolves around combinations of rice, beans (black and refried), cheese, and toppings, and they can be added to everything from tacos and burritos to chalupas and bowls.
  15. TGI Fridays main plant based vegetarian option is their Loaded Beyond Burger, which comes grilled and topped with white cheddar, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, and TGIF sauce. You can also order a Beyond Meat patty in place of other burgers if you want a varied selection of toppings.
  16. Wendy’s has a Spicy Black Bean Burger, for plant based Vegan  lovers. Their meatless burger features a plant-based black bean patty made with a blend of spices, layered with tomatoes, onion slices, romaine lettuce, chipotle jalapeños, pepper jack cheese, and a spicy chipotle sauce. Wendy’s also has a baked potato and a variety of salads available.

Do they make Vegan Plant-based Sushi? The short answer is yes, but learn more about Vegan and Plant-based Sushi in this excerpted article from Food Revolution Network.

Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish featuring rolled seaweed sheets, specially prepared rice, and usually some type of seafood, nuts, and/or vegetables. Its ingredients are typically raw, cooked, or pickled. And there are different types of sushi differentiated by their structure and composition.

The types of sushi include:


Makizushi is the best-known type of sushi, which consists of a single sheet of seaweed rolled around rice and fillings and cut into 6-8 pieces. The word “maki” means “to roll.” Makizushi comes in two basic sizes: larger circumference rolls with more fillings are known as futomaki, and slimmer rolls consisting of a single filling are called hosomaki. Each piece is meant to be dipped in soy sauce and eaten in a single bite (thus avoiding double dipping).

Another word for makizushi is norimaki; nori is the name of the seaweed sheet that’s lightly toasted, filled with rice and filling, and rolled.


Uramaki is inside-out makizushi. Same form, same ingredients, but with the seaweed hidden inside the roll, and a decoration of sesame seed, fish eggs, or other toppings typically clinging to the outer rice layer. Uramaki is an American invention, from the days when sushi was unfamiliar and seaweed altogether unheard of. The most well-known version of uramaki is the California roll, with cucumber, avocado, and crabmeat inside the nori, and rice outside.


Nigiri is an oval-shaped mound of rice, topped with a slice of something. Sushi makers mold the rice mound and press the topping on the mound by hand, which explains the name nigiri, which means “gripped or pressed (by hand).” Traditionally, the sliced ingredient on top is a fatty fish like tuna, salmon, or shrimp.


Temaki, also known as a hand roll, consists of a nori sheet wrapped around fillings in a cone shape. These are typically larger and more filling than the other rolls — one or two of these can make a complete meal.

The Evolution of Sushi

What Americans think of as sushi is quite different from traditional Japanese sushi, which itself isn’t that old. Whereas sushi in Japan is often eaten at special occasions, many Americans consume their favorite finger food multiple times per week. In fact, sushi is now more popular in the US than in its country of origin.

Sushi originated in southeast Asia as a way of preserving fish. Fishermen (and women) would press their fresh fish between piles of salted rice, pile on a heavy stone, and leave it to ferment. Initially, this process took several months. Once complete, the rice was tossed as waste. And since it was so labor intensive, only the wealthy could enjoy this delicacy.

Rice and Fermentation

Over time, people figured out that adding vinegar to the rice could speed up the rate of fermentation from months to week or even days. At these speeds, the rice itself stayed tasty and safe enough to consume and fish and vegetables became popular toppings and fillings because they were readily available.

The evolution of sushi continued in the port city of Edo, Japan (now Tokyo), where fishmongers found that putting the fish next to hot cooked rice could reduce prep time to just a couple of hours. But modern sushi as we know it really came about in the 1820s when entrepreneur Hanaya Yohei opened a sushimeshi stall on the banks of the Sumida River. With access to fish so fresh, Yohei dispensed with cooking and fermenting, and simply sliced raw fish overcooked and seasoned rice in the nigiri sushi-style. In a sense, sushi became an accessible, fast food thanks to Yohei (albeit healthier than the modern version).

The European Parliament has voted for banning caged farming

The European Parliament has voted for banning caged farming. Members want the European Commission to phase out caged farming by 2027.

558 MEPs voted in favor of the resolution – with 37 voting against the ban and 85 abstaining.

Committee members are now calling on the European Commission to phase out caged farming, possibly by 2027.

An ‘ethical imperative’

EU animal welfare standards already include certain restrictions on the controversial practice, such as tightly packed battery cages for hens. However, ‘furnished’ cages are still permitted in some countries.

The Commission is also being urged to propose a ban on the force-feeding of ducks and geese for foie gras production.

  1. Nonstick pans made of Teflon. It is too easy to overheat on the stove. When overheated the coating releases toxic fumes called polymer fumes in humans that kill human lungs and Teflon Flu that kills birds.
  2. Plastic Storage Containers. The polymers break down and contaminate your food. Save leftovers, soups, vegetables, fruits, etc. in glassware, not plastic ware.
  3. Plastic utensils and Tools. Spatulas, Spoons, Colanders, Measuring cups, etc.
  4. Styrofoam, plastic cups, and water bottles. All contain chemicals that leach into liquids. Use ceramic mugs for hot beverages. If allowed take your own ceramic mug to your favorite coffee shop.
